Anastasia State Park is a 1,600-acre beachfront park situated on a peninsula boasting four miles of pristine Atlantic beach and dunes in the shadow of America’s oldest city, St. Augustine. The park features tidal marshes, maritime hammocks, and ancient sand dunes, making this a captivating and popular destination for visitors.
Anastasia State Park was established in 1949 and is deeply rooted in St Augustine’s long history. The park is home to the Coquina Quarry, which was mined to help construct the nearby Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, a site on the National Register of Historic Places. Anastasia State Park is ranked in the top 10 best state parks in the United States and is known for its wildlife, recreational activities, and beautiful, wide beaches.
Cape Leisure operates food, retail, vending and recreational rental operations in the park under a concession contract with the Florida Park Service. Offerings include activities such as sailing, paddling and beach rentals, pavilion rentals, biking, interpretive services, dining, and shopping.
Challenge: Improve visitor facilities and services.
Strategy: Our first project to improve visitor facilities was a new playground, located near the park’s beach access, followed closely by the construction of a 1,200-square foot Anastasia Watersports concession building in 2017, expanding the recreational options in the park. The watersports facility includes a classroom shared both by Cape Leisure and state park rangers. New outdoor activities followed, with the addition of Hobie and Aqua Finn sailboat rentals and new interpretive programs.
Also in 2017, Cape Leisure created the inaugural Anastasia Watersports Summer Camp for children 8-12 years of age, with a week of daytime activities such as paddling and sailing instruction, beach ecology and marine science projects, nature hikes and more.
Cape Leisure operates the park’s main concession building, located beachside, adjacent to the park’s main parking lot, and a secondary watersports facility at Salt Run.
